I was in a restaurant last night and there was some nice music playing in the background. i checked out the speakers and they were tiny Tannoys, they looked like the mercury range (Mercury M1 etc) but they were significantly smaller than the M1s. They actually sounded really good I was quite impressed.

Had a pair of those and wernt bad. I felt they were better with the classical than the rock. Although I think the R1's pictured below are modded mercury ones to be honest.

David - I don't think the R1s could be modded Mercury's because they're much smaller. One of the times I auditioned my amp at a shop I heard them through R1s - they're tiny but didn't sound bad at all - inevitably lacking in bass though.

No the R1s were the same size as the M1s.

well they're either the MR (mini Mercury M1s), mMxR (mini Mercury mMx1s (with white cone woofer) or mMxRM (mini Mercury mMx1Ms) which went back to a black woofer but supposedly sound a lot better. the MRs by the way, sound crap, so I suspect it to be one of the latter two variances.

And the R1s are the same size as the M1s, and don't sound half as good. M1s are a classic imo. Fantastic speakers (note, no 'at the price')

I used to have some M1s, and I'd add "at the price". They lack midbass punch and the treble isnt that great. Tonally they're pretty good though. I also used to have Mordaunt Short MS10i's and they were great too, but in a different way. They had some nice midbass punch and sounded fast and exciting.

Strange - the speakers used in the audition were definitely Tannoy's and they were definitely tiny (about 6 inches tall) - I could have sworn they were Revolutions of some kind. If not then I've no idea!

I think marantz proved rory's point on the M1s....

They used a system for press demos, with a CD-63mkII KI Sig, PM66SE KI Sig and M1s. The speakers cost a third of what either the amp or CD player cost, and yet overall the system was extremely good for a system of its total cost.

I disagree, after owning them for some time I think they are very good for the money but spend more and you get more. They lack a bit of excitement and liveliness. Also, vocals sound a tad "pinched". Marantz used them with the KI stuff because they had links with tannoy and Tannoy didnt make any better sounding speakers that didnt cost more than the Marantz components. (The M1 were better than the M2 and M3, and the other speakers in Tannoy's range werent getting great reviews)

I've still got a pair of M1s doing rear surround duties in my AV setup. They were once my main speakers and very good they were too :)

I heard some Marantz stuff (CD17 KI cd and amp) with Tannoy Revolution R3s at Bristol 2 or 3 years ago and wasn't impressed. As Mr Ishiwata was there I told him so too.

m1s better than m2s???...think I would rather have that xtra bass.

I saw someone on a forum say they thought the cd17ki was naff..I thought so too...I;m being a bit harsh..uninspring more like it...dull...

with an amp like that technobear, any other amp will sound naff!!

how do you know they were tannoys?

sometimes public places use jbl..control 1s...arggh can't upload a pic..

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3050170514&category=14991 ???

tannoy r1s are m1s...just in a posh box and with a few tweaks..I think the consensus was at the time the m1 was a nicer speaker...

sometimes tannoy reveals can be used these are a studio version of th m2...with a smaller box....check em out...there quite good for the cash..

its like the cup of tea syndrome...it always tastes better in someone elses house!!
