Which Digital SLR

the nikon 18-200 is the widest range of zoom lengths ive ever seen on a consumer grade lens like that. I think that combined with a compact camera like a D40x would make a good combination. It's a lens with a decent range of zoom, and yet most reviews state that it doesnt suffer aggressively from distortion etc

I have the 18-200 on a D40; it's all the lens I ever need. The lens makes it a little heavy, but the results are worth it.

I disagree- I have one of these and it's great, especially for the price!

There's a very big difference between a 4x zoom like you listed and a 10X zoom like was being discussed. At a given price, the bigger the zoom ratio of a lens, the less good it will be.

In reality, going beyond about 200mm at decent optical quality requires special glass to be used (low-dispersion, fluorite, etc). These glasses are very expensive.
