    Hi all,

I'm after some advice/recommendations for the best pre-amp available for up to £500 (including s/h). I'm after a warm, full sound that is detailed, punchy but not too toppy.

I've got Isobariks and LK2 & LK280+spark power amps together with an LK1 at the moment. The sound is cold to say the least and very 'hollow'. There doesn't seem to be much bass at all really, which is definitely not how Isobariks should sound .
I've tried my bro's integrated valve amp and it sounded great!

I like to use the speakers for listening to movies as well, so there should be an input for blu-ray audio as well (but no need for surround sound). The blu-ray player allows me to stream music also and will be used as the CD player.

    Thanks!

It sounds like your primary problem is the positioning of the speakers in the room. Reflections from the room can cancel out the sound from the speaker and take away bass or mid.

If placement isn't an option, get a pre-amp with tone controls. Or get a good EQ unit like the modified DEQ2496 my business makes.

I don't have a demo unit, but you can easily try an un-modified DEQ from many online retailers. Just buy on the card and return within the time limit if it doesn't help.

    One other thing......

when I turn the power amps off, the speakers emit a high pitched whistling/popping after a couple of seconds - which I assume is the caps discharging. Is this normal?

Hi Chesterfield - as it happens I have an Alchemist Kraken Mk II pre which from your original post, might fit the bill. If you are within reach of E. London, you'd be welcome to try it in your system.
