I'm looking for a cd player to replace my now defunct Mission. I expect to spend between £300 and £500. My first choice is vinyl so nothing too harsh sounding please. Any offers?

Not aware of any second hand, but two 'new' players you could listen to are the Rega Planet (Rega are bringing out some new models, so you may well get a bargain) and the NAD C542. I've heard both the Rega and NAD players and both should offer what you are looking for. The NAD has an RRP of about 330 pounds and the Rega has an RRP of about 500 pounds.

*apologies for not including the 'pound sign' - but have just switched over to SuSE Linux and am using a US keyboard. Can't get the ALT-Numberpad 156 trick to work to get a pound sign!

Thanks for the suggestions but I can never bring myself to buy new so I'll keep looking.

I've got an Avondale/Arcam Alpha 5+ that I'm about to put up for sale. I've had it for less than 2 years, so there's still over 2 years left on the warranty. I'd be looking for £350.

Let me know if you might be interested

Hi there Heath. I certainly could be interested. Can you tell me what Avondale have done to the Arcam and what effect it has had.

avondale alpha5

hi paul,
i have been to avondale and heard the difference between the modded and normal. also a modded alpha5 against a naim cds and the alpha walked all over it. its worth every penny at £350 and they sound superb! you wont find anything near to it for that money mate...

Hi Paul

I don't know the exact details of the Avondale mods, other than what it says about it on the Avondale website:

There was a recent review thread over on Pink Fish:

All I know is that I sent Les an Arcam Alpha 5+ and got back a significantly better sounding CD player. The improvement in sound quality over the original player is/was an absolute bargain. I'm only letting it go because I just bought a Densen 400XS, which is even better than the Avondale, but with a rrp of £2500 it damn well should be.

If you're able to get to Lancaster, you're welcome to come and listen.

Heath
