Hello

I'm after some slightly more technical than normal help. :)

I was reliably informed that if i bought Zone Alarm Pro i would be able to configure it to be used with Xbox Live, so i went ahead and bought it...

Erm.... after installing ZoneAlarm Pro and firing up the Xbox to play on live i got the same problem as i had before with the standard zone alarm i.e DNS not resolved.

Does anybody here have any experience of the above? Anyone know how to solve my problem and configure Zone Alarm Pro. I really dont want to be playing without a firewall protecting my computer....

I've checked with microsoft and they said it was a problem for the Zone Alarm people to sort out... The zone alarm people really get too technical

AARRGGHHH the popups have sterted already.

Thanks

I have Zone Alarm Pro installed on my PC and trying to run my Xbox through it...

Xbox live is the is the name given to microsofts online gaming and requires a broadband connection which is on the PC (i do not own a router)

Up untill now the only way I've been able to use Xbox live is having Zone Alarm turned OFF, which really is not ideal.

I've looked at the link you gave and as it reads, a few people have had sucess in connecting whilst using ZAP 5 whilst others whave had to go back to using ZAP 4.5. To be honest i'm find it difficult to follow as i'm not too experienced in things 'networking'.

I will keep on trying (and learning).....

Thanks

Chris

chris,
get a router. as homes become more integrated this is a good investment in the future and wired only ones are so cheap now (27 quid from dabs afaict) it's a bit of a no brainer. get a wireless one and you open up the world of pc audio and other stuff so much more easily too.

Think you may be right... the router route :D will be a lot easier.

Apple Airport Express all the way for the music... (i wonder if it can be used withthe xbox)

Thanks

That looks very good... It's all for the PC.

The subject is getting more clouded now.... The modem i use is a USB jobbie from BTYahoo. Does this mean my first line of defence has to be in the computer? (software). Or is there something really obvious i'm missing. For example: if i go wireless, the router will have its own firewall, but this is after the internet access has gone through my computer, thus leaving the computer vulnerable.

Thanks again

Chris

Chris, you would want to get a combined ADSL modem/router i.e Netgear DG384 or similar. This then replaces your modem and provides the computer with it's internet access. At the same time this 'router' has it's own firewall built in protecting the connection before it even reaches the computer. The other benefit of the router is that it houses a 'hub', which is basically 4 or more ethernet ports enabling you to hook up several computers or devices to the one connection. For example with my DG834 I have 2 PC's currently connected to the net, but to connect my Xbox all I would need to do would be to run a network cable from the lounge to a spare port on the router and let it handle the internet connection. Of course I might have to set up a firewall rule to allow the Xbox Live traffic, but that would be fairly easy with the router's own web interface.

As for the wireless adaptor, it doesn't matter whether it is running on a PC, Linux or Mac network as long as the network supports the wireless/wi-fi standards.

Chris, no problems with the questions. As you've rightly surmised, the Netgear is similar product to the one in the link but with more ports and the 'g' version adds wireless capability. However with the Netgear and similar routers i.e DLink, Linksys etc. you'll need an ethernet card/port on your system, or a wireless card in the case of a wireless router. As they mostly don't have USB connections, but most modern PCs and I assume Macs come with at least one ethernet port built in so that shouldn't be a problem. Some manufacturers/retailers do bundles with wireless cards etc. For example www.broadbanbuyer.co.uk are doing a bundle with the DG834g and a USB wireless adapter for £97 at the moment. It all hinges on whether you want the option to attach more than your computer and Xbox to the internet.

Another point to bear in mind is that if you do decide to use the Speedtouch unit, you could always add a stand alone hub to the ethernet port to provide you with more ports or even a stand alone wireless access point to give you a wireless network. For example with the DG834 I could add a Netgear WG602 to one of the ports and replace my wires with a wireless network. There is certainly flexibilty which ever route you take.
