hi folks, got a day off today - weather too bad to travel, well, thats my excuse...

anyway, was reading the metro newspaper the other day and read an article about ear candling..using Hopi!

they're used for cleaning your ears out...

anyone heard of that..?
I had, but heard the treatment cost arounf 60 notes, any, was pointed to this site - http://www.hopi-ear-candles.co.uk/

and I've ordered 3 pairs of biosun ear candles - eucalyptus and pine for 15 notes, should arrive in a few days, hopefully this should make my system sound even better...

any thoughts on this..?

:MILD:

i notice in the instructions they say nothing about all that pesky, hot, melting wax dribbling into your ear. that's going to do your hearing a lot of good.
cheers

Yea tried them, i think it would be quicker to get the quack to do it tho.

Quicker maybe but a damn site more unpleasant. I have to get my ears syringed periodically and it's certainly not one of my favourite ways to pass the time. I bet these candles would do bugger all for my silly ears though :( .

I actually really like the sensation of having my ears syringed.

Problem I find is, unless you can really really justify it to your GP, you're unlikely to be able to get booked in for a syringing session IME i.e. your ears have to be visibly blocked up enough in the doc's opinion.

I've been turned down before for syringing, even though I felt it was necessary at the time.

Seriously, do you really set light to these "ear candles" once you've placed them in your ears?

And the doctors are right of course because having your ears syringed is not good for them, and does I believe make the overproduction/collection of wax problems worse in the long run. Unfortunately my ears do get visibly blocked (I have particularly narrow ear canals apparantly), to the extent I never get a doctor to look and just make an appointment with the nurse to get them cleared when I can feel it's needed. Sadly I've never yet had a nurse look in my ears and complain there's nothing to clear...

Hi Martin,

I agree with what you're saying about having your ears syringed on a regular basis when it clearly isn't necessary. But the one time when I did ask, I had partially lost hearing in one ear and I could clear the apparent blockage (it felt like something was in there) sometimes by swallowing or playing around with my ears externally. When the doc had a look down there with his scope he said he couldn't see anything, nor could he see any sign of infection. I'd not had a cold recently either.

Hi Martin,

I agree with what you're saying about having your eye syringed on a regular basis when it clearly isn't necessary. But the one time when I did ask, I had partially lost hearing in one eye and I could clear the apparent blockage (it felt like something was in there) sometimes by swalling or playing around with my ears externally. When the doc had a look down there with his scope he said he couldn't see anything, nor could he see any sign of infection. I'd not had a cold recently either.

Henry, I'm scared !

LMAO! :ffrc:

Did you really write that?

Hmm, well I've gone back and corrected it now, must be all this DBT nonsense going on elsewhere on the forum that's eroded my mind! :D

I'm going to get back to enjoying some music and a new toy now! ;)

they didn't double blind test it though. they should have run a test where they had a control group of waxy eared pikeys, then the test group with the burning what-nots stuffed in their ears and another group who had warm bits of paper stuck in their ears for 10 minutes. then put everyone in the middle of a football pitch and release a bunch of barking ravenous dogs. those who hear the dogs first and manage to escape are considered to have the best hearing whilst those ripped apart are deemed to be pikey soap dodgers. there science inaction.
cheers

One exhibition was doing ear candling for $30. The people selling this said that the suction created by the candle "cleared your mind and sinuses." I questioned them enough to establish that they meant this literally and believed the ear was an opening from the brain and sinuses. The woman running the booth stated, "It cleans the whole head, brains and all - they're all connected you know."

there was a promotion on for this at my local gym...

''hopi ear candles'' they were called.

Apparently effective at removing wax!.

As any good doctor will tell you though of course, wax is there for a reason, and the body needs no artificial assitance in cleaning the inner ear...

(exceptional cases not withstanding!)

I've had an ongoing throat infection (taken me 3 - 4 years to get to the point i'm at, which is a 4 - 5 year waiting list for an operation  ). an my ears regularly feel blocked. I went to the doc's and mentioned it but they said it was nothing. How can they say it's nothing when I KNOW it's not!!! I feel pressure in my ears and they make a sort of popping feeling sometimes. Like having water stuck in them. If I rub my finger down the gap between sidies and ear it causes it, and sometimes sounds can too. very, very annoying!

yeah, I don't think my ears are that dirty, but on the odd occaision I can feel a bit of wax fall insode my ear...urgh! jusy a tiny bit mind you, but when I try to remove it, it just spreads around...! damn!
