Coloured or Neutral Sound Whats your preference

Is the front baffle supporting the woofers demountable from the front (as these where soffit mounted) - there are slots top and bottom on this panel.

Any hints as to who actually made them?

No slots Andy just strips of velcro.
The bass drivers have '79' stamped on the frames and the cones are a mix of 2231a and L136a (same ) and haven't been upgraded/reconed any time in the last 10 yrs.http://www.zerogain.com/forum/attac...ment.php?attachmentid=1081&stc=1&d=1197826085http://www.zerogain.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1082&stc=1&d=1197826398

Not sure what a L136a is - is that a 2231a recone substitute? How did you decipher the "last 10 years" bit?

So it looks like they have been reconed at some stage which is good. If they hadn't they would have been well and truely shagged by now.

Keep the pictures coming :)

Cooky - This has been a thread of great interest please keep the info going from a technical and historical viewpoint its taken strictly come dancing off my number one position.

Its all so tempting - I need to keep my eye out.

Thanks
Andy

Anyone know why i'm restricted to 300k total for pictures ?
According to the Lansing heritage site tech library there were /are pro and domestic 'versions' of the same JBL drivers that just have different model numbers. eg the famous 077 tweeter is actually a 2405, the 2231a is a L136a.
The 10 years bit came from Kieth.

Interesting you were impressed by the sound with only one speaker running. I imagine the bottom end will really get going with them both fired up.:) I still think JBL does something magic with the upper bass that really suites replay of a bands rhythm section.

Any early signs if the horn has any decent wood beneath that paint (I fear it may not). For anyone following this thread, here's the technical info on the horn used in the system (a "Smith" horn I believe).

Sadly no, I may just have to spray it satin black as trying to strip into those vanes is a bit of a job.

Will keep folks interested for hours..

Shame you don't live closer to London as "Rich" on Lansing Heritage is a wiz at all this sort of stuff. He's the guy that built 4345's from scratch and nailed it.

Listening to some Foreigner at the moment. Only JBL can give that weighty sound the big 80's synth and drum recordings need. :)

I am a confirmed Tannoy nut since 18 yrs old but am feeling a strong pull to the dark side at the mo'. :D

Stumpled across this pair of 2231A's on German eBay. Will be interesting to see what they sell for...

It's a sad fact that old JBL gear is worth more as parts than as complete systems. There are guys in the US making a living out of tearing classic old JBL's to bits. :(

EDIT: They sold for €499...and they only had a refoam (not a recone), and the Alnico magnets probably need re-gaussing...Jeez.
