Hi-Fi News

I kind of agree with Granville. It'll be a cold day in hell when some of their reviewers ever find anything less than very nice to say about the equipment they review. Also funny how the same reviewers always seem to review the same manufacturers. Must be quite cosy.

Its not run by you, is it Granville?
Apparantly they have been dropped by WHS because their circulation is now so low.

I think its the best publication I never read.

Actually Tone, my initial mickey take was motivated by that assumption, but I concluded I'd been hasty. Dunno, maybe.

a) the Tonester may not be referring to you. b) it's not ridiculous to suggest c) the most successful marketing is the virul kind - these days clever use of seemingly objective opinion is a very powerful selling tool.

Say a person finds an interest in a product and searches the web for references to it. They come across a couple of forums where several (apparently different) people are singing its praises - this can help seal a positive brand/product image much more firmly than far more expensive advertising. It's hardly rocket science that modern marketeers can register on forums with different names. In fact before launching any product I would spend at least 6 months seeding the web with pages, links and references and ensure it could be found on Google.

riiiiiiight - so basically as long as i slate every magazine on the market i will be accepted on this forum then?
sorry, but what a load of boll0x.

I think I've told this tale before..........a little background first though.

Many moons ago a friend and I started to build amps ...pre and power jobbies no great shakes 100watt mosfets and an all descrete pre. These were liked by all who heard them, we sold quite a few. We thought that it might be a rather good idea to get a mag review done. So after contacting varrious people in the profession a well know journaist [at the time] agreed to meet us. As it happened it was at one of the Heathrow shows, we took the pre down so he could take a look ...it fitted in a slim briefcase.
So there we were sat at the bar ...and he says "I'll write what ever you want, infact you write down any phrases that you would like to see appear in the review ...on one condition I get to keep the reviewed kit ! ". To say we were gobsmacked would be an understatment. After we finished playing goldfish we thanked him for his time and the beer [he did like his beer!] and then we left. We were naive in thinking that reviews were done on merit rather than back handers and bungs. Now this was long ago and thing have changed maybe, though that mag is no longer published. But it does makes you wonder when you read these reviews in the mags, well it does me anyway.

I wasnt referring to you, you seem paranoid. If you think the concept is b0llox you're being naive.

not naive bud, just seem like a lot of personal attacks on individuals who are positive on certain subjects that others may not agree on.....;)

Just for the record:
HiFiNews is OK, but limited in the gear it reviews
HiFi Choice ditto
HiFi World is OK, but veering toward the geeky end
HiFi Plush has lovely smelling paper and is moist with HiFi porn, but occasionally overly gushing
What HiFi is ****e.

I think y'all will find "Singletrack" and "Motorcycle Sport and Leisure" are the best mags...

Seems to be the nature of the beast that is "forum" muuhhaahahaaa :JOEL:

If you stand up and say something positive you get some support (hopefully) and you get a whole load of moany ponies and snipey insecure girly men raggin' your ass. It's no big thing really, we're all adults are we? (mostly :) )

You dont feel got at in this thread do you? If not give an example where you feel things have been a bit ott?

Its a sad fact of this hobby that those with no money or interest in purchasing more hifi are happier spending money on hifi mags than on music mags.

But there you go, so long as your own kit pops up now and again you are happy right?

I bet a fair amount of you jump straight to the end to see if your kit has been reviewed.

That girls is the power of these mags over the human male psyche

Especially when some bit of kit seems to get consistently good reviews just after it comes out and then years down the line it is panned.

It is a shocking story Z and I wouldn't be at all suprised if it the practice was rife today, there is so much money involved and the nature of most reviews are so subjective that the industry is very vulnerable. I had some dealings with a known hifi journalist a year ago and I wasn't impressed.
