It's here!

Yep, that was it, it had a red badge on the back that probably said VR4 (sounded familiar when you mentioned it) and as far as I recall two bloody great fat exhaust pipes, one on either side. Probably not the sensible family motor I need then :D.

Red badge is VR-4. Twin exhausts is not standard, so probably a club car: www.clubvr4.com

Standard AYC system service interval - the EVO have the same.

280bhp was quite a lot in 1996, especially from a 2.5. It's quite capable of destroying anything but group IV or V synthetic oils (mobil 1 and other "fully synthetic" oils are typically group III) in that time. Other similar cars require similar service intervals: Skyline GTR, Legacy GT-B, etc.

Yes, I suppose its only twice frequency of a 10000 mile seervice.

Agreed 280bhp from 2.5 lts is a pretty healthy output even now....over 100bhp/litre.

Amazing really, when I was a kid during the 70s that output would have been VERY difficultot achieve (the preserve of exotica).....I think outputs shot up with the increasing popularity (and experimentation with) turbocharging during the late 70s.

I think oils haveimproved considerably, as well.

At one time you would have used standard Duckhams GTX (whatever) ....there are probably better oils around ...

Talking about oils and experimenting I have found the best stuff for my engine is £1.97 a litre Asda 15/40 mineral :D.

15/30 just goes straight out the exhaust with a puff of blue smoke. That said my engine has 105,000 miles on the clock and I am only expecting another 10k out of it (what do you expect from a 1950's designed engine block with no service history?).

I see what you're saying but I keep thinking of all those metal parts clanging together at high speed.

I use a decent oil if i can. :MILD:

The new car that's rather taken my fancy (although I have even less chance of affording one than the M3) is the new bentley brooklands...

...1050Nm @ 3250rpm. It doesn't so much accelerate, as alter the rotation of the planet...
I just checked - the Bentley has over double the torque of the current BMW M5!

don;t have a lexus any more - i chopped it in for something more practical when i went self employed. i currently drive a 1.9 diesel mpv that is probably the best car i've owned when all things are considered. it's fast enough to not be frustrating, big enough to carry pc's, mountain bikes, sweaty ravers, electric wheelchairs, sofas etc. and economical enough to not cost a fortune to run. i'd still like a new lexus though

what type(mpv)?

it's a seat alhambra s - the 115 tdi pd version. although if i knew then what i know now i'd have held on for the 130 pd version and rear electric windows.
i have occasional moments of weakness when i lust over a 300zx twin turbo, skyline or similar cockmobile on auto trader but then i think of all the stuff that my 'bamma does and realise that they just wouldn;t fit my current life.
the toyota verso with the is220d's engine looks interesting though but not sure it'd be big enough for things like mountain bikes and electric wheelchairs though.
to be honest i'm currently of the mind that if my bamma breaks i'll just repair it cos all i'd do otherwise is buy another one. it's also kinder to the environment.

Well so far I'm sticking with my aging Saab 900SET: 4yrs on, another 140K, and no end in sight yet. Once upon a time this was seen as a huge heavy hatchback, but these days nearly a quarter of tonne lighter than a high-spec current Golf, Focus etc. And about 240hp (with shedloads of torque.)

Very anonymous, quite quick enough - and owes me nothing :D
