I'm thinking of getting a cheesy lamp for the bedroom.

    But what?

    Lava Lamp or Lightning Ball.

I dunno why, but I sort of favour the Lava lamp at the minute, although lightning balls are cool too....

    Help me decide...

    paul,
as a fellow lover of cheezy lighing there may be a couple of other options. mathmos do these rechargeable light balls which are very cool and you can stash them anywhere as they are rechargeable.
also argos do (did?) a sound sensitive laser crab which is about the best 20 quid i've ever spent. put on some music with heavy bass, close the curtains, turn off the lights, wick up the music and watch the light show. good for those evenings after a stressful day.
    cheers

Paul, what about those floating fish, that 'bobble' up and down the water tube, with the full light spectrum banging away behind it, else one of those Fluensent green dido's so you can 'see how not to get bored' :D I'd go for a orange glitter lava lamp dude, you know it makes sence WM

    Hey Julian,

I would love to go for one of those sound sensitive jobbies, but unfortunately I do seem to spend most of my music listening time with headphones these days, and it would seem a bit wasted on those :p

LOL @ green dildo. Orange eh? I dont believe i saw any of those in the gadget shop...

I am leaning towards a lava lamp admittedly though!:D

    Cheers cookie....

One question about Lava lamps though..... How long do they last? Do they have a certain lifespan or something? The ones in the gadget shop seem to take normal lightbulbs, but what about the goo inside?

I have a lava lamp and a lightning lamp.

The lava lamp is very cool and I will never tire of it

The lightning lamp makes a weird crackling noise which is very disturbing, interferes with the remote controls and is too frenzied to look at for long. Definitely not relaxing. I rarely use it.

I used to have a bubble tube until it fell over and smashed into a thousand pieces soaking the living room carpet in the process :( They are also quite noisy as the tube amplifies the noise of the air pump.

I would go with the lava lamp!

It used to be the case that the liquid could go cloudy but I think this issue was resolved. Mine is 3 years old and is as clear as the day it was bought.

    Bulbs are easy to replace.

Paul, I'd go for the lava lamp as the lightning ball will just make your room look like a set out of "Weird Science" :MILD: !

    paul,
sorry i should have clicked you use headphones a lot. however the laser crab also has a random setting too that switches patterns at random instead of in time to music so it will work with your headphones too!

sounds like you've made your mind up to go with the lava lamp though... good choice.
    cheers

I had one of those flat plate like things which was sooooo coolllll..
until my cat decided to knock it over.... It was like the plates that the Borg have behind their head when in recharge mode...you know the one's...blue lightning zapping out from the centre of it..damn good and pretty too and did not cause any inteferance on my kit and it responded to sound as well...

    Regards

I got a clear one with silver coloured wax. Didnt realise these things took up to 3 hours before they work...

Good one Paul - I have 3 lavalamps and one fish/bubble lamp (not in use at mo); only one of the lavalamps is a Mathmos (my first lamp) and the bottle on it went cloudy due to inappropriate siting in direct sunlight for a bit too long... I bought a new bottle and it's fine again now :)

They're great - but yeah, they can take a while to warm up. They get quicker with use though. Mathmos ones work better than the clones, but my only real gripe with the clone ones is that a lump of wax will stay at the top of the bottle...

To be honest, I am a little unimpressed with it after the first day. It is a rocket shaped one with "silver" coloured blobs in clear liquid. Looks a bit dull to be honest, maybe i should have got a "technicoloured yawn" model. Still, it reckons I should give it up to 5 uses before it changes properly and it reckons my patience will be rewarded with a "spectacular" change. Ah well, it was only £15, so its hardly the end of the world. They do seem to take ages to warm up though.

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention that :shame: I have mine on a time switch :)

Mine is blue liquid with green blobs. It is very relaxing to watch. It takes about 1.5 hours to get going but it's worth it. The green blobs seem to glow.

Clear and silver does sound a bit dull :( Is the silver opaque?

Yeah the silver looks a bit like the blobs of metal on Terminator 2 when the T1000 melts. I'll give it a few days like, it looked good in the picture, but not only does it look a wee bit dull, but there doesnt seem to be that much movement in it either.

Yet another elephant I've bought I suspect

Lava lamps rule. Been meaning to get one for ages, but haven't got around to it yet.

A mirror ball on the ceiling would be cool as well, if your room has a high enough ceiling or you're short enough to not hit your head on it. You can pick them up quite reasonably priced too.
