Not quite finished yet, still working on the faceplate, but internal work all finished (although the hawkeyes will spot that the tape loop is not connected, I don't need it). Total cost around £400, not counting the first switches lost in transit, at a cost of around £75 to me:cry:

The case was donated by Thorsten, saving me some money. Rob is going to give me the knobs. The faceplate was a simple aluminium plate provided by my cousion which I need to drill and fit. All I need to do now is to drill a couple of 15mm holes for volume and source selector switch. If only I had a 15mm drill:(.

Initial impressions?, very loud:yikes: I have wired it up for 6db gain, so at lowest gain I have only 46db attentuation. I like it so far:D.

Excellent work Dev.

It will sound much better when the WAD knobs go on ;)

Are you going for relay switching ......main iec socket?

what output wire did you go for?

Thanks guys.

Rob, the bigger and shinier, the better:D

Pete, the case is an old WAD active pre. That is the reason for the IEC socket. I don't have any need for it (yet).

All wires to/from the transformers are copper, even though they look silver. I'm not sure what they are plated with but my guess would be silver. I used solid core silver for connecting the RCAs (also silver, my favourite colour).

Well done Dev looks very good! How easy was it to get those big cap clamps?

I will be wiring mine up soon too. I should have some old computer cases coming my way Monday to be re-gigged for audio use!

Check out this bad motha' of a volume switch!

Hi Simon,

I bought the clamps from DIYHiFiSupply. There features in their latest Django. Take a look at their website.

I like that volume switch of yours, should keep you busy for a while:).

Are there advantages in wiring it up with the 6db gain sonically as opposed to unity gain.

Dev, Not sure if you are aware but the new versions of the WAD amps will feature a small pre built board to allow relay input switching. It is likely to be sold seperately as an upgrade but you could also use it in your pre amp if you run it from a dc wall wart.

What is the advantage behind relay switching except having nice buttons?

A shorter signal path as you can mount the board very close to the input sockets, cut out some cable runs. Personally I doubt that would make an audible difference though, so we are left with nice buttons and remote control :)

I wasn't Rob, but I'm not sure about any real advantages over the switch I'm using. Now I may use the "relay switching" as suggested by Thorsten for AV bypass if I get in the mood, but I think I'll need his help and I fear he may be too busy now.

Currently my problem is finding a 15mm drill bit to fit a 10mm chuck so that I can drill holes for the switches in the new faceplate. The likelyhood of finding such a drill is very remote so I'll drill lots of little holes in a circle and tidy up with a round file. Hard work and time consuming .

P.S. I used 6db gain (without the option of switching) because it sounds better and has more drive (allegedly:)).

the best thing to use is a step drill, they're available from most good tool shops
or this one on ebay

Mines been wired ghetto style in a plastic box with one set of inputs and a piece of bread board for the ground.

Sounds amazing which is why I can't take it apart and built it properly yet :)

Please post a picture Ant, just to see how it compares with Simon's "afro":D.

In case you didn't see it, Simon was using croc clips for his TVC and the wires spread out like fibre optic lights or "afro".

Wow that looks nice Dev :) What are the knobs like?

Maybe the front could do with a wipe or a gentle polish?
