Those who heard how dull and lifeless the Marantz was earlier in the day would have been absolutely shocked by the improvement that £5 worth of parts and 20 minutes soldering could have; Sure, it wasn't as good as the Quad but it was very listenable. It had dynamics, rhythm and clarity; None of which the stock player possessed.
This really is where you see the 10% rule (10% of the price of the player is the cost of parts) in action. Adding £25 of better parts at key points is cheap to do as DIY but would add £250 to the final price of the unit. Thank God for DIY is all I can say.

Upgraders and cablers like Zanash are a large indication of the future direction and development of this industry, and incidently all other *hobby* industries. Why? because of forums like this and the development of on line "community".
