Reccomend me a Pre Amp

I allready have a reasonable DAC, the superdac that was modified by Wadia Meister all these years ago on this forum....

Made a big difference to the 506, much more dynamic and less fluffy sounding. I reckon the 506 transport is pretty good?

Have looked at this:

Dynavector L200

http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180539220734&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and this

Audio Note M1

http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370412970335&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Also this Bencmark Dac remote pre amp:

Seems a lot opf money for a tiddly box with plasticy remote. I also have a turntable that gets very occasional use, so phono stage is handy. The benchmark doesnt have many inputs either.

Think it needs to be secondhand that I look at....

You are being naive, I can quote numerous examples, but just one will do. A UK tai-chi instructor wrote a book on the subject and went to look for a printer, he had many quotes the best European one being from Sweden, but the one from China was half the price, so he took that. He received delivery and was very happy until he found the printer had printed an extra 10,000 copies and was selling them himself. There is no business ethic, and very few ways of enforcing the law especially if you are a Gwailo up against a Han Chinese. They rip each other off so don't expect anything different. They are working fine with Cambridge and will do as long as numbers keep up and they are making money from you. Any problems and they will pirate your designs and undercut you, sell on ebay and all the other ways they can to make up the shortfall.

It's good to see that you are an Equal Opportunities Misanthrope ;)

I would try to borrow a good passive pre-amp.

.. the experiment to see, whether your power amp is happy being driven by a passive.

If it works, you could try a better passive.

Great passives are easily reachable in your budget.

It takes a very good active pre-amp to provide the neutrality of a passive. On the flip-side with the wrong amp they can sound lifeless.

I understand this is an impedence matching issue.

to Richard Dunn,

lol, I read with great interest your piece on Chinese ethic, social norms and all, I agree quite very much, being fully Chinese myself, got to hand it to you, nicely put;

but I would agree with Rob on the matter of hi-fi, there are decent Chinese gear just as there is a pool of badly made trash, so just trust your ears, at least that's what I go by also!

Good Boy Richard Call a space a spade .The Chinese will take over the HIFI game
with their British names made in China .They worry more about money than sound
just listen with your ears not your pocket Noel W.

Whilst everyone was squabbleing, I've bought a scondhand Bel canto S300i integrated within budget.

Will see have to see how it goes, will keep it if I like it.

I too call a spade a spade. You are a bigot, Sir.

Chris

Where I come from a spade is a shovel, and you need to be very careful who you call a bigot, because it might offend.

Is it really necessary to use such pejorative and personal terms?

Well if you throw one of my amps out the window it doesn't come back :D

Hope it matches up well, nice one!

And what a cracking amp it is! liked it straight out of the box.

Amazing from something so small and aethetically pleasing.

Haven't tried the USB dac yet, is there any way I can use it with my CD player?

I would need to convert SPDIF coaxial to usb, not sure if thats possible??
