Top 10

I had a lot of trouble keeping it to only ten. Others that nearly crept in would be...

Gladiator, Bourne, Eye's wide shut, Ali, High fidelity, Layer cake, Rogue trader, Ray, Raging bull, Scindlers list, Sexy beast, Trainspotting, Vanilla sky, Withnail, Spinal tap, Band of brothers, Enemy at the gates, Troy, Empire strikes back, Goodfellas, Get carter, Spagetti (Fist full of $ / Few $ more, Good bad & ugly), Once upon a time in the west.

For me though, it's a balance of personal enjoyment and sheer respect for the icon that certain films are. I think bladerunner is popular amongst those who appreciate Art.

Thing is THE 80's classic horror, which is the only one of it's type in my collection. :JPS:

Would have to agree whole-heartedly with that. Only 80's horror in my collection too

DT

Unless Aliens classifies as Sci-fi horror?

I think some people include them in their best films list just to appear cool and trendy

In that case I've been cool and trendy for the last forty years!(when I first saw 'Rashomon') :MILD: :MILD:

Although the head scene in Jaws made me jump, the scene in Carrie at the end when the arm comes out of the grave, gets me everytime. There is something about the timing which although I know its coming I always hits the spot.

top ten in no particular order

The time machine (original version)
Carrie
Exorcist
Enter the dragon
Terminator
Spinal Tap
The untouchables
Mash
Catch 22
Shrek

The scene where they find the space ship in the ice won't be bettered IMO. Also, that husky dog/alien is the best actor I have ever seen. It's all so gritty and realistic (like "Alien", NOT "Aliens").

The whole CGI trend the last ten years has completely lost me I'm afraid. Am I the only one that thinks all CGI stuff looks s**t. If Lucas can't get it right (Star Wars I - III) then there's no hope.

There's a separate thread there maybe: top ten scariest moments in film.

After some thought, my list contains more than 10 but it's difficult to whittle it down. There are probably quite a few more I've forgotten about too.

Alien
Apocalypse Now
Blazing Saddles (The first 18 film I saw at the cinema)
Bullitt
Dirty Harry
Enter The Dragon
The Godfather (all three)
Goodfellas
The Great Escape
The Hitcher
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Psycho
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Taxi Driver
2001 - A Space Odessy

Okay I watched Bladerunner again after this thread but I still find it boring. Why is it influential? Lovely lighting and sets I have to admit though. I love that very first scene over the city.

I don't know if I can get 10 top films but I'll have a go:

1. American Beauty - why has this not been on anyone's list yet?!

From here they are in no particular order

2. Ghost Town
3. Total Recall
4. The Matrix (the first one)
5. Green Mile
6. Life of Brian
7. What the Bleep do we Know?
8. Three Kings
9. About a Boy (not sure about this one)
10. Ali-G The Movie

Although they are on my top 10 I couldn't watch some of them again but they were brilliant the first time.

Some others that are also very good - The Parole Officer, Swordfish, The Life Aquatic, Terminator II, Lost in Translation, 5th Element, Sin City, Hitch Hikers Guide & Spirited Away (anime).

I also have to mention StarGate SG-1 and some anime like 'I, My, Me, Strawberry Eggs', Chobits, Angelic Layer and Full Metal Panic. Some of those are better than the movies in my top 10.

Bladerunner boring, but Total Recal is in your top 10!!!

Simon, for once on here your young age is showing :D

Bladerunner is about the meaning of life. What is it to be a man?

Oh come on, Bladerunner hardly touches on the topic of what it is to be a (hu)man. Apart from that it is a boring story about some guy chasing androids, though it does look pretty cool. Total Recall is good old fun and doesn't pretend to be more. Though I suppose it was maybe one of the first to make you think 'am I in the Matrix?'.

Have you seen 'What the Bleep Do We Know'?

I think from this thread it is clear that what makes a great movie is not so much the movie but what it was like when you watched it.

The city scape is just a back drop. I take it you got the point that Deckard was an android and that he felt love?

I have an albulm called "Do androids dream of electric bleeps?"

(which was inspired by bladerunner, which in turn was inspired by Asimovs rules...)

Not heard of that film though.

I thought it was more left in question, he could be an android but there was nothing to make it certain. What makes you say he definitely was?

You should watch 'What The Bleep Do We Know'... its about quantum physics and covers quite nicely some philosophical things too, all wrapped up in a move-like documentary. If you can't find it PM me your address and you can keep my back-up for me :)

It's crystal clear. I thought it was only Americans who even questioned it, or even possibly missed it. I came to my own conclusions early on and can talk for ages about it! I did a quick search though for you, rather than hijack too much, scroll down to section 12.5 to 14 which covers some basics...(but do read all of it)...

Don't get me started on quantum madness. Ever read brief history of time? Major side track best left to PM or beer at BBV's! :MILD:

Terrible, terrible documentary that is sub-primary school level in the quality & depth of its examination of science & philosophy. Dumbed-down for American housewives with absolutely no prior knowledge of the aforementioned subject matter.

Pi, Primer and even The Matrix examines these topics more effectively IMO.

I'd say it seems more likely he is a replicant after reading that but its still hardly clear as there are some pretty good points against it like it says on that site. I think the fact Gaff followed him is a good one, but I just thought he was a bit of a weirdo ;)

I started A Brief History of Time when I was about 10 but got bored of it. Maybe I should dig it out again.

DT, 'WTBDWK' may not get very in depth on the topic but it is certainly not primary school level and starts people thinking, which is the main point of it I think. It's also entertaining apart form the odd polish wedding bit!

It also stars the only attractive deaf actress I can think of :)

I'm watching Bladerunner again tonight as it's been a while

Apocalypse Now
Dawn of the Dead
The Incredibles
Mr Jolly Lives Next Door
Schindlers List
The Producers
The Seven Samurai
City of God

Shawshank Redemption
Get Shorty

and in reserve: most of what everyone else has said plus Amadeus, Goldfinger, Dune, X-Men, Gods & Monsters, Star Wars IV, and so many more. :)
