Top 10

No order really and I might change my mind another night when I remember other ones, but here's ten really good ones anyway:

- LOTR
- Downfall
- Rob Roy
- Withnail & I
- LA Story
- Saving Private Ryan
- Dumb and Dumber
- Star Trek V
- Falling Down
- Jackie Brown

You will notice that apart from a few obvious ones common to many a list I also choose certain movies which aren't exactly held up as high examples of cinematic artistry. I simply like them and can watch them over and over. I'd welcome comment and discussion. Are there any other special fans of LA Story, or those who bizarrely never seem to bore of watching Falling Down ?

I see Greg has listed Mr.Jolly Lives Next Door. I agree; I just didn't list it 'cause it isn't a full length movie. Great choice though.
Also, looking over your other lists I wonder if I should also have included

American Beauty
The Incredibles - a fantastically well executed cartoon !

Oh, and what about Crimson Tide ? You see, I told you I'd remember more !

I have not seen either of those but StarTrek V is good as is First Contact :D

IV and V were special largely due to direction by "Spock" and "Kirk" respectively. They knew how to tap into the relationships between the main characters in the crew, at times humourously and at other times poignantly.

By the way, I urge you to see those two odd choices I mentioned - LA Story and Falling Down, for different reasons. LA Story has, for me, a certain supernaturally driven romantic magic no other film has captured quite the same. Falling Down is pretty unique. It is what it is and doesn't need to be clever or a masterpiece. It is a kind of tragi-comedy though I'm not sure how much of a comedy it is intended to be. I just love following the man's frustration, the turns of events and the dialogue as he ( Michael Douglas ) falls further and further down the path of destruction. Robert Duval in the role of a level headed cop makes a great contribution to the film. You can buy both of these films very cheaply.

But they don't pause the film when you go for a pee...and my bum goes dumb

Heat
Bladerunner
Pulp Fiction
Apocalypse Now
2001
Withnail and I...scrubbers...
Life of Brian
Darkstar
It's a wonderful life
Manhunter

The answer is to replace your sofa with a luxury toilet. Sit all the way through your nights viewing with your pants down on the the throne, ready for action; spontanious or continuous at your whim.

Something along these lines, in no particular order.

Indiana Jones (all three)
James Bond (all)
Any Given Sunday
Terminator
Predator
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Goodfellas
Scarface
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

I always watched Any Given Sunday the night before I played, then on the morning of the game I would have it on while I was getting ready !

The opening sequence is blistering !

Always find you need a couple of stabs at these top 10 lists as loads more come back to you when you have posted, so here goes with my first effort to get the juices flowing

1. Godfather (all, but 1, 3 then 2 if pushed) - obvious but the best
2. How to get ahead in advertising
3. Quadrophenia
4. Legend of Baggar Vance (I'm a golf nut aswell)
5. Weird Science
6. Shawshank Redemption
7. Shallow Grave
8. The Crow
9. Good Will Hunting
10. The Color of Money

Wanted to put Withnail in - but too many entries already, and whats all this Seven Brides for Seven brothers nonsense.

At the moment i can only come up with nine, i really can't think of a tenth.

Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica 1948)

Blade Runner (Ridley Scott 1982)

The Blue Kite (Tian Zhuangzhuang 1993)

Carnival of Souls (Herk Harvey 1962)

Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou 1991)

Russian Ark (Aleksandr Sokurov 2002)

The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman 1957)

Star Wars (George Lucas 1977)

2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick 1968)

I know 2001 and Blade Runner are here yet again, but they made such a big impression on me that i had to include them.

My list has pretty much stayed the same for years, i don't really watch films these days very often, not like i did when i was younger. I find it an effort to sit through films now, i have a pile of recently bought criterions including Joan of Arc, Boudu Saved From Drowning, Au Hasard Balthazar sitting around. Maybe these will appear in a list one day, as soon as i actually watch them of course.

Superb film my son, has to be one of Howard Keels best.

Take a step away from rush rush life and watch it, then you will realise how wondeful a film it is.

Levi - must admit it is ages since I saw this film (if I ever saw all of it), next time I get a chance I will give it another try, but if its as bad as I remember I'm coming to you for the 3 hours of my life I will have wasted :-)
