This is a forum for adults,

I disagree with this point, which is why I voted no - and supported the swear filter in the first place.

ZG is a hifi and music discussion forum. People of any ages could be reading, and we haven't got a ''warning 18+" section at the begining.

On a side note, I've always felt that people who need to punctuate every sentence with an 'f' word or similar are pretty illiterate characters at best. I know this is a little bit arrogant. I don't think PFM or ZG members are like that, although you get the occasional nut-bar...

I hate all forms of censorship so I voted no.

The swear filter irritates me a lot. I actually think this forum has lost a lot of its attraction due to over zealous moderation, but thats another issue..

Well, I'm extremely literate yet swear an awful lot in normal life, it's all part of the expressive power of the language. But the point is not to encourage swearing, merely not to excessively hand-hold. After all, when anyone reads TIU's post above, where he writes, "What ****ing filter?" nobody does anything other than make the necessary mental substitution and read it as, "What f.ucking filter?", so what's the point putting the asterisks in? Even if you believe in the idea of some language being "bad", the asterisks do nothing to stop the word appearing in your head when you read the sentence.

PFM has no swear filter, probably has as many or as few young readers as ZG, has a bit of swearing, and the world hasn't ended as a result. Kids swear all the time anyway, and it's very far from being the worst thing they can do.

They swear far more adults if the mob of 30-40 teenagers sharing my train journey some mornings are any indication.

Looks like I can type "cock" and "turd", as well "felch", so there's still possibilities for creative swearing..

And the new favourite down the pub 'Clunge'

Oh what a limited education I have; I had to look up felch and now wish I hadn't ...
Not such a limited education as you make use of the ';' in about the right place.
I to find that definition rather hard to swallow.

Many years ago in Belfast, I remember "Up yer clunge" being used instead of "Cheers". I've never heard it used anywhere else, although I've been using it ever since. Nice to see it's finally gaining popularity.

No replies from any mod other than Chris yet, so I guess they must all be on holiday.

Nice to see an overwhelming majority of those voting in favour of scrapping it.

A bit late in my response, but

'That a Big 10 4 Rubber Duck' - I could have put the f word in front of the big !

yeah, but perhaps some of the responses above are doing the removal vote no favours... :D

We're paying attention, don't worry ;)

I guess a trial period could be introduced and if not abused then..?

but as chris said - maybe we'll need to kind of warning if youngsters want to use this site, but then we don't not want them do we?

without my mod hat on i say burn the man and everyone run around naked covered in peanut butter screaming obscenities (if that's what makes you happy).
with my mod hat on there are many things such as litigeous people with diminished parental responsibilities or over developed religeous mania who'd love the chance to make a quick buck because someone wrote **** ;)
as a parent myself i try to protect my child from this kind of thing or at least let them know that it's not apropriate at all times however i doubt a 9 year old would be interested in 2 grown men calling each other ***** due to a disagreement about a bit of wire so.... where's the peanut butter...

If anyone knows how to successfully sue and make cash out of reading bad words on the internet they are welcome to join me in what could be the most lucrative business proposition in the history of this planet!

Tony.

PS according to google there are 82,000.000 hits for **** and 16,700.000 for ****. Even if we only make a buck each word it's a serious winner!

tony - if you can sue for spilling coffee in your lap or threaten to sue and have subjects banned then it's a consideration in the 'don;t need the hassle' kind of way. i doubt a suit would be successful however i also doubted that a cyclist could get fined for riding on the road. so given a suitably insane judge or jury it might happen.
