I have to agree with Jez on this. As someone who studied electronics and practiced firstly as a design engineer, later in Broadcast technical sales, I am offended by the snake-oil so prevalent in the audio industry. Grounding boxes filled with kitty-litter, and in a similar vein, the latest I've seen is a loudspeaker 'improver' containing magic crystals with only one wire that attaches to one of the loudspeaker terminals.
Add fuses, mains cables cable risers and other total nonsense, and there's more con going on here than at a homeopathic convention.

I was fortunate than when I started work, I had the HiFi shit knocked out of me by older, wiser and kinder engineers.

Caveat Emptor is all well and good, but the dividing line between being economical with the truth and outright cheating and lying has been completely rubbed out by these charlatans, and they need to be called out and ridiculed at every opportunity.

I was doing some training years ago, with a bunch of Libyan Techs. We Stopped for a coffee break while the test equipment was warming up. When we came back, I took the interlocks off the 10kw transmitter I was using for training, which was fired up on carrier only. They all got back promptly, except for one laggard. He swans in with a cup of thick Turkish coffee, took a sip and realising the bulk was sediment, threw the coffee grains into the transmitter.

There was an effing great bang as all the trips operated. Wrecked the transmitter. I glared at this little s---t, but before I could bollock him he declared, "Maa'lesh Inglese, soon it will be dust in the desert."

While on the same project, having given the guys their tasks for the week, I was pretty much up to speed with everything. So, I asked the senior sparks on site, if there he wanted any help. Crafty sod said, "You could always wire up the incoming mains to the Main Distribution Panel. That was a large armoured cable and made an entry via the basement. Jeez, that was hard work, but I stuck at it and everything was going well.

Said sparks turns up, squats with his back against the wall, watched for while, sipping his coffee. Then this little Glaswegian git says, "Aye, no bad - are you ganna leave it like that?". Gets up and walks away chucking to himself. Bloody sense of humour of the man - could do nothing but laugh myself.

Ah well then I suppose trumpism, fake news and the rise of fascism are "just a game nothing is for ever and every new generation has to make its own mistakes - you can't teach experience." ??

I've no idea what you are on about re the mains dist panel!

I'll take comfort on your behalf that if some yob torched your car you would be completely fine with that because it would have been scrap/recycled in maybe 10 years time anyhow

That's what insurance is for! And what purpose is served by worrying about things that may never happen.

We are all just passengers, so you have to either trust the driver or never get on the bus. I used to fret, worry about things that were; looking back, never of any consequence. I am amazed I got to the age of 77. So, I'm in credit by seven years. what more can I ask?

Being honest with people may well be salve to your conscience, but folks don't have to listen. I'm not saying don't tell the truth. But that is as much as you can do. Persuading one person is a momentous achievement in modern times. The rest have their reasons for not being persuaded and can't be arsed to explain - so why give monkey's, when they don't?

"Ah well then I suppose trumpism, fake news and the rise of fascism are just a game". They are! but when Honest Folk fail to reject it, and simply do nothing, it succeeds. HiFi however, cannot be gauged by the same yardstick.

Why not, design and build the best possible amplifier, regardless of cost, and market it for what it is. It will be far more gratifying than tearing your hair out over something you will not change - unless you establish a Credo for the kind of quality the top manufacturers claim as their own?

That too is part of the game! Once these issues made me quite angry. Now, I just use them as a source of entertainment - Pythonesque. I know now I my existence, or otherwise has never been of any consequence to the Grand Scheme, only to family and friends.

My taxes have long been taken and spent; and continue to be spent, on what - ever Governments chose and I had/have no say in the matter - at all. Parliamentary Democracy is promoted by politicians to sustain their power and influence over us - it is not something I subscribe to. "The Divine Right of Kings" has been supplanted by "The Divine Right of Parliament".

Maybe it say's it all in that I've not bothered much here myself and due to it being so quiet... hmm... catch 22!

I see no reason this site should not be as popular as certain others at the end of the day (or much more popular anyway!). Lack of publicising its existence?

There seems to mainly be people who joined and asked a single question, which usually goes unanswered, and never post here again.... very odd.
