Flatty's turntable bake off...

Seeing that Gyrorbe/SME IV had me wishing I'd kept mine (though without the Orbe 'upgrades').
Lovely engineering, sound and looks.
You actually feel like you've really got your money's worth with it.

How does a Phonosophie differ from the Thorens original - presumably a TD320/321?

Audioflyer will no doubt clarify, but I think the main difference is that the motor on the Phonosophie is a stepper motor (perhaps the bearing is also different),

That one looks to have a third party stylus.
The original was Gold with 'Technics' on the front.

It's not the original stylus.

Compared to the original the after market one that I currently use if anything has a firmer bass and harder treble.
In comparison to the original stylus and maybe due to its age the bass was warmer with a very sweet treble
mid were very similar.

Sadly The boron cantilever snapped and I have yet to find someone to repair it. :(
Goldring are willing to have a look at it but are saying that if ESC can repair it then they may not either.

Recently I found some thing interesting that the Jico stylus company have released a replacement boron
cantilever stylus with an in line contact needle for the EPC205 mk3.

Something that I will be looking into in the near future.

Prof VDH used to refurbish and fit his best profile styli to the 205.
it was the only IM/MM type cartridge he'd touch, which tells you how highly he regards it. Worth getting a quote perhaps.

I think its a TD160 Rob.

The turntable that most people think it is a Thorens TD2001.

Ingo Hansen design the Phonosophie P3 this design was then used by Thorens for the TD2001 & TD3001 but without the high tech engineering.

If what I been told and read the only bits that the above decks share are the hinges for the lid and the speed selector switch.

The motor is a stepper motor and the bearing is phosphor bronze with a one piece arm and bearing board.

He was also commissioned by Thorens to design the TP90 tonearm sadly may people in the UK ditch this arm in favor of a Rega or Linn basik.

I will follow this up with a bit about Julian Vereker involvement.

Thanks for the info.
Clearly a lot more than a simple makeover going on.

I have spoken to them early this year about repairing the stylus assembly and at the time they were unable to carrier out the necessary work but the did give me a quote of £450-£480.

Someone has also told me that somebody in Italy can preform the repairs with a new boron cantilever and an in line profile needle so I will be checking this out as well.

Sharif,

I first heard of the No. 3 from a friend of JVs many years ago and I'd love to hear more about it. By all means, please tell us as much as you can about the design including JV's involvement.

regards,

dave

Hi,

The stylus looks like a cheap conical tip one that costs £14. Could explain the sound.

Good videos - you can hear some of the differing characteristics of the various t/ts (though that could be something to do with the wandering mike). Great looking t/ts. Love the Voyd, but am smitten with the WTL.

Sounds like you all had a top day - looking forward to the audio files.

Give me a couple of days to edit the files and post them up.

Listened to them again and the differences are easy to hear, with no deck names attached to the files I think there might be some surprises in store :)

Which version of Solitude Standing is that? Sounds different to mine (though my memory might be playing tricks: must hunt out my copy)

Edit: obviously talking b*ll*cks. So used to a live version I have I'd forgotten the original vinyl version.
