You can use an iPod with uncompressed WAV files if you want to

When Stereophile reviewed it recently they did pretty much the same measurement suite they'd do for any CD player having converted their test tracks to WAV and uploaded them. It measured as good or better than many CD players

Be warned on this when playing back, the ipod attempts to put a number of songs into cache.

when the song is a big Aiff or what ever then the harddrive will be thrashing continuously drasticxally reducing battery power.

It fine of course if you have it plugged into power.
