JC,

But, like Joe says, don't take it personally, .... you just got left behind when the rest of the world moved on.
I'm unflappable, unlike my trousers, which are flapped by my Tannoy's total awesum trouser-flapping bass.

Tut tut JC, even you should know that Es14's were taken out of production because they were not profitable to make, not because they never sold. On the contrary they sold in great numbers and were an excellently performing speaker for the price.

I imagine adm 9's and their even more perfect progeny have some way to go until they have shifted as many units as the ES14's did in their short lifespan.

I don't think so Simon, they were cheaply made and cheaply priced, but they still didn't sell enough to stay in business.

Agreed they were short-lived, but that was because most people dumped them just as quickly and moved on to better things.

I can't see why you make the comparison with adm9's, ? - they are a completely different concept, - far from just 'loudspeakers', since they are the whole hifi in one box, including the remote control pre, amps, and dac !

I don't know exactly how many AVI loudspeakers have been sold (I'm only a customer) but I do know that AVI have had to increase production capacity several times to keep up with demand and still there are occasional waiting lists. I think it's many, many, thousands now.

Don't forget also that AVI are a much older company (1989) than Epos were before they went into Creeks holdings.

Is that why you listen to your hifi dressed like this, Joe ?? ;)

well they weren't cheaply made, the speaker posts were custom made units, the cabinets were balance veneered, the tweeter and mid/bass were both completely custom designs from the ground up.

The mid/bass driver uses a cast alloy frame and full alloy faceplate, mmm let me think how many speaker manufacturers use alloy face plates instead of cheap plastic these days? mmmm only the expensive ones.

ES14's were £500 when they stopped making them. Now adms are just over twice that, with dac and amp, so who's product is the budget one, built using cheap parts. Hell Ash even dropped the Danish drivers to go with the cheaper Indian ones, hardly high end and certainly not custom manufactured.

but as you were.

I'd imagine that could be quite annoying if listening to a solo violin sonata.

:p

LOL...the last place on Earth I'd take sound advice from would be from a PC site of any sort.

TBH, I haven't heard it nor am I likely to anytime soon as PC audio doesn't interest me in the slightest.

I used to think the same thing, but I took a chance and the rewards have been brilliant.

When the bass is there, the bass is there.

Anything less is mid(range)-fi.

Basil,

I downloaded some test tones and burned them to CD. I'm not getting 20 Hz bass, but was pleasantly surprised that the Tannoys are solid to about 30 Hz, which covers everything except the biggest pipes on an organ.

Proper bass is nice — and hard to live without once you heard it.

I like the convenience of downloading music but I've yet to be impressed with results. One day perhaps....

If you listen to classical, there are some excellent free downloads about.

I have all my CDs ripped onto a computer.

Actually, I listen primarily to classical.

The Macbook Pro/Lavry combo I've heard didn't sound much better than MP3 to me. I found 16/44 sounds far better, more dynamic and alive.

If we had a large library of hi-res downloads available, I might be tempted to stream and store them. Ripping my 2000 or so CDs just doesn't sound like alot of fun though.

I decided to join this forum to increase my knowledge of Hi-Fi and love to hear from others and really dont mind negative critism at all. I would the advice i have learnt is already paying off which is great.
With Hi-Fi what sounds good to one person someone else might completly disagree so there is no wright or wrong (or wight or wong as J.Woss would say, crap joke).

Hope that answers your question.

:D
